CLUB HISTORY
Mountain Pony Club was formed in 1971 by a group of horse lovers in the Mt Barker District. The first rally was held at the present location of the Mountain Pony Club grounds on the 14th November 1971. The grounds then belonged to the Stephenson Family, who kindly allowed Mountain Pony Club free use of the grounds for a number of years.
Mountain Pony Club has developed rapidly since that time. A club house was opened on the 4th June 1972, with extensions to the shed to accommodate increased membership being completed in 1974 and further extensions in 1996. An equipment shed has also been erected.
In the period since the formation of Mountain Pony Club, a great deal of work has been completed in building and maintaining training equipment and an extensive cross country jumping course. Adjoining land has been made available for special events and training and this generous help from adjoining land owners has been greatly appreciated.
In April 1978, a sub-committee was formed to investigate the feasibility of either purchasing or long-term leasing of the land belonging to Mr Ted Stephenson which was currently in use as the Pony Club grounds. The sub-committee presented its findings and a decision was made to proceed with the purchase of 14 acres of land for the Mountain Pony Club. Delays occurred due to necessary sub-divisions and also the illness of Mr Stephenson who passed away in December 1979.
Finally in July 1981, the purchase was finalised and the official opening was held on 22 November 1981. The grounds have been named in memory of the Club's patron and friend, Mr Ted Stephenson.
In 1989, a further 20 acres adjoining our existing land was purchased from Mr Klenke, giving the club grounds a total area of 34 acres. This was made possible by numerous members through debentures.
In November 2021, the club proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary, a milestone for any club!
